Heads or Tails
September 25: HEADS – Pet(s) OR TAILS – Pet Peeves
I choose: HEADS
We’ll never live without pets. I’m sure of it. They bring you so much comfort and joy. We’ve been lucky to have been blessed by two pooches. Here are the stories of how they came to be with us:
Spring ’96. I was working a late shift at the portrait studio one night. When I got home, I noticed, from the outside, that all the apartment lights were on. I thought it was odd and wondered what Michael was up to. I got out of the truck and lugged myself to the door, opened the door, walked in, and looked up to find Michael standing there holding a little brown puffball.
“What’s that?”
“That’s your puppy!”
“My puppy?”
“Yep.”
We’d spend the next couple hours talking about names and it was determined that she would be named Sadie Girl. She was the sweetest puppy, but in those puppy times she was a holy terror. She’d destroy the very first elephant figurine that Michael gave me, some other knick-knacks, shoes, walls, carpets, and more.. But, we still loved that sack of brown sugar.
She’s eleven now and getting old. I can’t believe that she’s been with us for almost our whole marriage. She’s our “first child” and will always be. Michael says that when she dies, he’s gonna have her stuffed in one of her famous poses. I think that’s fairly gross and hope he’s joking.
Having been with us for-like-ever also means that she’s made all those moves with us. She’s been a real trooper through them all, too. While living in New Orleans we realized that since we were gone throughout the day, that we needed to find Sadie some companionship. She’d destroyed some wall moldings, our down comforter, and marked up some of our furniture. Naturally, she just needed a friend to play with…neigh…a sister!
One morning, while at Michael’s parent’s house , we scanned the paper and found that there were some boxer-mix puppies for twenty bucks. We left with a quickness, headed over the Causeway , to go get our new pup!
On the way, we got pulled over for speeding. Luckily for us, so did another car. This other car chose to be mouthy to the officer whereas Michael was all “Yes Sir”, “No Sir”, “Thank You, Sir”. That kind officer let us off with a warning not to drive so fast on the roads. “Thank you, Sir” and off we went.
We got to the house and there were only two dogs left. We picked the blonde one! She was so tiny and precious. Her eyes were big and bright and she just had the cutest expression ever. But, what would we name her? We finally agreed that we’d call her Summer Girl.
My parents had come to visit the week after we got Summer and seeing as I was a little over-protective of our newest baby, I carried her around in a pink basket for the first few weeks. Paris Hilton had NOTHING on me! ;) My parents suggested that we go to Florida for a few days and Summer came along with us. On the way over, we stopped to sleep at a hotel, and when she pooped my mom noticed something white and wiggly in her poop. Worms! Ick! My baby had wormy poops. So, we went to a vet clinic and got her some medicine. I will never, ever, ever forget the way that little puppy screamed when they gave her the shot. But, she was cured. We got so much attention having that little puppy. There was a time where Summer was scrawny and odd looking, but in recent years she’s really gotten beautiful. Kinda like a gangley teenager that blossoms into a beautiful maven.
Summer was recently sick. She had what’s called pyometra. To fix it we had to spay her. So, at the age of 10 she’s been spayed. Basically, I’ve put up with the ‘bleeding tootie’ for all these years and now it’s over. Really, though, what matters is that she’s healthy.
And, together, these dogs are too funny. Summer tries to act like she’s the top dog. Oddly enough, Sadie lets her. Sadie’ll groom summer and it’s just the sweetest thing to watch. Summer’ll hump Sadie’s face and it’s just the grossest things to watch. [[lol]]
We love our dogs. I don’t know what we’ll do when they aren’t with us, but one thing’s for certain….our hearts are full of memories and those never go anywhere even through the transcends of death.
Message for Sadie Girl and Summer Girl:
“Ruff ruff ruff. Ruff ruff. Woof. woof.. woof… Ruff ruff roo!”
Don’t tell them that they aren’t human, either. Hence the message.. {{strong eyes}}
