“Left & Right”
Our boy, the one pictured in yesterday’s P H O T O H U N T is left handed. It was a bit of a struggle to get him to write, but that was my fault. I didn’t think he could be left handed, so I kept putting the writing utensil in his right hand. He would flat our refuse to write. I would wreck my brain with why I couldn’t help this little guy learn to write.
Not only was he left handed, but he lacked fine motor skills; though his gross motor skills were and are excellent. The struggle continued until last September when he broke down and said, “Mama, it’s just not comfortable this way!”
The light bulb finally went off and I realized our third born child was left handed. Ever since then he’s been fine with writing. I, myself, had to do research on how to teach a left handed child how to write but it hasn’t been too hard. It’s no longer a struggle, either.
What we did have a problem with was tying his shoes. We refused to buy him slip on shoes or velcro so we were subjected to tying them for him. His siblings would help, too. However, this past month we reached a breaking point. He was getting older and he needed to learn. So, last week I told him that if he didn’t practice five times on the left, and five times on the right, he would lose his computer time. You have to understand that his computer time is golden! It’s what he looks forward to and what motivates him to get through his schoolwork.
The first time he sat down, after the ultimatum, he did it on the fourth try. Then he did the other shoe on the second try! Finally! He finally did it. Left shoe, right shoe, he can tie them both. Geez, if I knew all it took was the prospect of losing computer time, I’d have issued that warning sooner
My next mission will be potty training the baby. I figure I have a good couple years to psyche myself up for that one, though!

The men in my family (dad and brother) are left handed and we are all right handed…lol

I’m right-handed but my left-handed grandmother made me aware of the ways in which the world favored righties………I was so happy when my classroom got desks that were good for both lefties and righties. Grandma would be proud!

I misread “My next mission will be potty training the baby.” to be “My next mission will be potty training that baby,” meaning your lefty. I thought, “Whoa! She’s got a genius on her hands.” You very well might have, but upon a second read of the sentence, I got it. Third is a lefty for me, too.
