Heads or Tails

HEADS – Mark

When I saw the prompt today, I was flooded with quite a few things I could write about.

Should I write about when I was a little girl and our church held a “Miss Macedonia” contest, and how I was coaxed by all the older gals to be openly flirtatious with the Master of Ceremonies, Mark:

Mishelle, how old are you?

Nine.

Do you have a boyfriend?

Well.. no, but you can be my boyfriend!

I immediately kissed him on the cheek. Red faced, I’m sure! And, with all my cuteness and funny banter (see, it started young), I didn’t win.

* * * * * * * * *

Then I mused about the different marks the kids have on their bodies. Benny’s cute mark on the bridge of his nose, Mikey’s soft beauty mark, Livey’s above her eye which is almost in the exact spot where mine is, and the two little marks Davey has on his leg. While a sweet way to interpret the prompt, it still wasn’t where I wanted to go with this.

* * * * * * * * * *

Then there’s famous Marks to talk about: From Mark Twain to Mark Wahlberg (a/k/a “Marky Mark”) to Mark Harmon.

The Adam’s Mark Hotel where Michael worked at on 9/11, and got let go from shortly thereafter.

Mark Makeup from Avon.

Hallmark. Benchmark. Landmark. It’s almost never ending.

* * * * * * * * * *

However, what I’ve decided to write about is something that many mothers know. They know it all too well. It’s the STRETCH MARK! The marks left as the elastic skin stretches out as a baby grows within. The marks left as a reminder that her body once housed precious life. The marks of motherhood. The marks that so many would like to erase as they are underappreciated.

I don’t care to erase these marks. They are a part of me, and they speak volumes to me. My mother has them. My grandmother has them. My great-grandmother probably had them, too. A common bond. One that is precious and true; true to life and motherhood.

Rejoice in your stretch marks! To me they are beautiful recognitions of a job well done.

    I don’t have them, although I wish I did. However, I think you wrote a fabulous post for HoT this week! I really enjoyed reading this.

  2. Mr. Smartypants is a Mark. He hears “Marky Mark & the Stinky Bunch” constantly!

    As for Strech Marks- I went from supa-thin to giant baby and my tummy never looked the same. Six pregnancies later and those same marks work just fine.

    ps- Marky Marks calls ‘em my tiger stripes! ;) Ah, TMI!

    Bah! I wish I could blame my son for all my stretch marks. As far as anyone else is concerned, he was. But just between you and me, I might have had some before he was even conceived.

    Shh! It’s a secret!

    love how this post went :)

    And stretch marks? I’m at peace with those that have settled in for the long haul, but – please! – won’t someone tell me how to reclaim my innie belly button??

  5. 11.27.2007

    Oh yes, I have my tiger stripped belly and sides from being pregnant with my daughters. I’m told in time they will fade. But those marks are still going strong four months (to the day) after last giving birth. LOL!

    Great choice for the theme!

    Very cool post! I love all your “mark” topics, even the rejected ones! :)

  7. 11.27.2007

    Great post! Wish I could erase my stretch marks – they’re not from having babies, but from gaining and losing weight goodness knows how many times.

    I’ve not got my Heads or Tails posted yet – just stopped by to let you know you have an award waiting for you at my place. Happy Tuesday!

    I never would have thought of ALL those Marks. Hmmmm, Mark Wahlberg…however could I not think of him?

    Ewwwwwwwww, and stretch marks? Okay. Ya, I WANT to forget about those.

    Good job.

    My H o T is posted.

    YES!!! I love my stretch marks! I wouldn’t give them up for the world. Some people think I’m weird. But, what I find weird is the women that obsess and bitch about them after giving birth. Those are my only reminders of her time in my body; the movements, the kicks, the occasional pain my ribs. I miss them all. I see them as proof; yes, you grew inside me…wanna see what happened as a result of that? I waited 28 years for those stretch marks and I earned them dammit!

  10. What a nice post. I love your attitude towards stretch marks. I agree, they are a sign of one of the greatest blessings in life.

    So Marky Mark, of that video that I saw on a Heads or Tails post today, is Mark Wahlberg? I’m glad you told me. I wish people would realize that some of us just aren’t with it and would add that context, as you did. Thank you!

  12. 11.27.2007

    Oh my gosh.. I really didn’t see that coming and when I read it, I laughed out loud!

    I have stretch marks on stretch marks. Hahaa!

  13. 11.27.2007

    Loved the flow of this post, and I even mentioned my strecth marks in my HoT this week. Great as always.

  14. 11.27.2007

    I’ll take Mark Harmon please …..
    can I trade in my stretch marks?

  15. 11.27.2007

    A “flood of ideas…”? No wonder I couldn’t think of anything, you were hogging them all!

    Great post though. I do appreciate my stretch marks. Everyone single one of them is a great reminder of my lovely children. But I like to show off the prodigy rather than the stretchmarks.

  16. 11.27.2007

    he he the boys story was funny :)

  17. 11.27.2007

    I don’t have stretch marks, and I may never have the opportunity to gain them. But maybe some day. Or maybe someone else bear the stretch marks and give me a precious gift. If only…

  18. 11.27.2007

    Great H or T! I am with you on stretch marks!
