11 Months

Dear David,

Today you are 11 months old. The time has surely flown by. I can still remember this month, last year, very clearly. We called you “Dude” because Papa and I couldn’t come to an agreement on a name. Little “Dude” just seemed to be fitting, it still is. I will tell you, though, that you were *this close* to being an Andrew, a Hunter, a Samuel, or a Daniel. I’m glad you’re a David, though! It fits.

You are such a smart little baby. There are things that you do that simply amaze me. When you were just two weeks new, you batted at the little toy on the infant seat. I thought that, surely, it had to be clear coincidence. It wasn’t. You batted at that pink cow, over and over again. Even now, the way you hum those songs from Thomas the Tank Engine, you show us signs of your genius. I’m your mother, I have every right to call you a genius.

Do you know that your brothers and sister are so enamored by you? They are. We might have been worried how adding another child to the mix was going to work out, but now I see that it’s worked out for the best. Your siblings have learned more about patience, trust, dependability, and pure joy in this last year than ever. A baby brother does that. A baby is love, and we’ve been blessed to feel and experience it.

Let me not even get started on your Papa. Oh boy, do you have him wrapped around your finger! Surely he loved the others that much, too, but I think there’s something to be said for just having ONE baby, as opposed to three. The “Irish Triplets” were a lot of work at one point. I don’t know how we did it.

So much has happened in this year, your first year. So much more is bound to happen: your developing speech, your first steps, the day you break out and run-free, your Christening, and so much more. I can’t wait for it all, and then again I want for time to slow down so I can enjoy every last drop of your babyhood. Because, seriously, time is flying and before I know it I’ll be sitting at this table teaching YOU how to add, subtract, multiply, divide. I’ll be sitting here listening to you read me a story. I’ll be sitting here marveling at how far you’ve come. I’ll be sitting here wishing for time to turn back, to a simpler time.

For now, though, thank you. Thank you for adding to our lives. One more month to go and you’ll be one!

Aah – so adorable. I know exactly what you mean about wanting things to speed up so you can see them learn and do everything but wanting it to slow down so you can enjoy it.

That is such a wonderful post! It’s just so sweet :) and that video made me wake Popple up from giggling along. It’s moments like that, which make me wish I could have a whole gaggle of children.

But we’re not. We have our two boys, and when we’re ready we’ll be looking into the possibility of adoption for our third child.

It’s scary just how quickly the time goes by, and they grow up right before your eyes.
