Since late October Davey’s been having some fun in a walker. You know, the kind of walker that many regard as the devil of all baby contraptions. I was one of those that did, and none of the other kids had one because of it. We had an exersaucer for them, that they all loved, but nothing else. We had a playpen, too, but none of them used it either. I think because we had them in such close succession that it was just easier to gate off the whole living room.
Now, seven years later, it’s all different. The walker is so not the devil of all baby contraptions. He went from just walking around the kitchen to getting up enough speed and strength to cross over to the carpeted part of the house. The walker was an integral part of his day. It was his means of getting around, as well as his means of torturing poor Sadie. Summer would just up and leave, but Sadie would just lie there and take it, poor old girl. I digress.
On New Year’s Eve Michael and I made a decision. I had taken Davey by the hands and he took off walking, but because of the walker he was walking on his tippy toes, arching his back, and sticking out his tummy. Muscle memory. The muscles were used to doing that in the walker, and so it raised some concerns. We decided that it was time for the walker to be retired.
The first day was hard. I put him in the exersaucer for a few minutes. He was so frustrated at it because he wanted it to walk, but it only rocked. There was a lot of floor time, a lot of cruising on the furniture, and a lot of dog hair on his jogging pants. We made it through the day, though. The second day was much easier and he didn’t even miss his walker, or so it seemed. Plus, I walked him around the house numerous times, by holding his hands from behind him, and I noticed that he wasn’t doing the walker-syndrome-walking.
This morning I woke up and remembered that I had a different kind of walker in the abyss (read: garage). So, in I went, retrieved it, set it up, and showed it to him. His eyes got super wide as he shook the little blocks and banged on the hippo’s head. Then I showed him what to do. It was love at first sight. See for yourself:
I’ll be skinny in no time!

Y’know, we have that hippo in our garage. Our little one has never given it so much as a glance. Funny how one kid will adore something while one will think it’s b o r i n g.
Go Davey….very cute.
Cute! Mine all had similar “walkers.”
How CUTE! We had a walking/ride on toy with Liv and will get Gabe one as well! Glad he likes it!
Cute! He looks like he picked that up with no problem at all. He’ll be mowing the lawn by spring.
