Project Support - Beauty in Nature

Posted on February 11, 2008 by Mishelle | 14 Comments

I posted this a couple weeks ago. From that list there are some things that I’ve been doing. Like, taking the lead out of my foot, not buying disposable water drinks, trying to go green with as many products as I can, conserving water and electricity, and just living the “New American Dream”. I’m trying to learn how to live consciously, buy wisely, and make a difference.

It’s not easy. So not easy. It takes effort, but in the long run it’s going to be worth it. I plan on calling around to see if there are any places I can take materials for recycling and I’ve looked into buying canvas bags from our local grocery store, to use, instead of accumulating these darn plastic bags. They are only a dollar a bag and I only need ten. That would really make me feel good about my adding to the ever present problem of garbage and the overabundance of plastic bags; those that are not biodegradable.

One time a friend said to me, jokingly, “Yeah, we have our own private space at the landfill!”

I didn’t get that joke. Maybe because it’s so not a joke. The more waste we put out there, the more our earth gets cluttered with it, the more we contribute to its demise.

Another thing I plan on doing is learning how to compost. I’m going to be planting a vegetable garden this year, and I want to reap the benefits of using compost. I’m in the learning stages of how-to, but everything I read makes me believe–deep down–that it’s the right thing to do.

There’s just so much we can do. One person at a time, one family at a time, we can band together to help each other become a lot more earth conscious. I’ve already learned some things from reading others’ Project Support - Beauty in Nature posts via Lotus at Sarcastic Mom [dot com].

This is the tip of the iceberg for me, and I plan on dedicating a sidebar page to this movement! There I will update all the things that I am doing to help the earth. Al Gore said something about the earth having a fever and how science and engineering need to lead the way to cure it. I think he’s right in that the earth is sick, but I think it’s MANKIND that must lead the way to making it WHOLE and HEALTHY again! I’m going to do my best to do my part. After all, I have four little people that need to learn how to be wise in how they act, too.

Go you! I don’t do much, but the reusable bags just simply ROCK! I *love* mine. Easy to carry, hold an assload of stuff and super durable. My store gives me money back for using them, too, which was the real reason I tried them. Not sure if most stores do this, but for me it added up, and I do like knowing I’m doing something good because I actually prefer it to what I was doing.

nope, it’s really NOT that easy, is it. and it’s so DAMN easy to not do it. good on you for putting out the effort!

I’m thinking of joining in with this worthwhile meme, too. We live in a real enviro-friendly state (Washington). Our garbage service also picks up recycling for us, so lots and lots of folks participate. We live kind of out in the country, too, so loads of folks garden.

Your children are SO going to love the garden! When my children were little, they loved to go out to the garden to select their own fresh snacks! It was so cute. :)

Rock on, sister. I’m with you - it may not be easy, but it’s worth it!

We’re looking into composting, too. My family (growing up) has always done it, and my dad uses it in his vegetabel garden. Time to follow another example from daddy!

    Thanks, Mishi! :-D

Composting is awesome and there are many ways to do it. You can build your own and start from scratch or you can buy a ready made composter with a starter already in it.

It’s a great way to reduce trash and add extra goodness to your soil.

I’m so with you on the plastic bag problem-it’s huge.I am definately going to buy canvas bags-your post made me feel guilty thinking of all the bags I have stashed away. And good luck with the composting. My husbands step mother does it and it has become natural to her-plus she has the best garden! She mixes the compost with manure she gets from a farmers and he rototillers it.

  8. Kim Says:

It has been difficult to making small changes in the house..and I have yet to do the plastic bag switch!

    Great Post Mish!!

  9. yertle Says:

Thanks! You just inspired me to look up how to compost! I needed that — I have been procrastinating.

    Such a great, inspirational post!

Veggies are a great easy way to start gardening. We did a pizza garden one year: peppers, tomatoes, basil, and some other herbs.

We just switched to the green bags a couple of shopping trips ago. It is amazing how less bags we are bringing into the house!

We have composted once…it was this garbage can thingy we had out by the back garden. We have moved way too much these last few years to get one going again!

  12. Loralee Says:

I suck at being green, but I’m trying some different things I never thought I would (Like the shopping bags)

  13. Judith Shakespeare Says:

    A wonderful blog movement, indeed!

The first steps in any great endeavor are the hardest… But you’ll be up and jogging around in no time.

And that’s why I love ya!

  14. Crunchy Domestic Goddess Says:

good for you! it sounds like you are on the right track. :) composting is actually a lot easier than i thought it would be. let me know if you need any help. i just got started a few months ago and am amazed at home much food waste used to go into the trash, is now going into the composter.
