Impossible Mission
Originally posted January 12, 2007
The other night I had gotten up to feed Davey at about 4am. By 5am I was back in bed and he was snuggled back into his bassinet. I fell asleep and shortly thereafter I heard some rustling. I had no idea what it was but I had visions of Sadie and Summer attacking the box of Russel Stovers that a family friend gave us as a congratulatory gift for the birth of Davey. I quickly got up and as soon as I was going to turn the corner to enter the kitchen I see Mikey and Livey in the pantry getting [what I thought were] granola bars.
“What on earth are you guys doing?”
[blank stares]
“Get your butts back to bed. It’s 5:30 AM.”
[We walk back to their bedroom.]
I look at Mikey, “What were you doing?”
He stares off into space, pretending to be awake and asleep at the same time, and says, “I dunno.”
I look at Livey and I’m getting ready to question her but she has her eyes tightly closed so as to divert my attention, I’m sure.
I look at Benny and all I see are his big brown eyes and extra long eyelashes flashing brightly.
“Go back to sleep guys.”
When everyone was awake I went ahead and asked them again what they were doing. And, the truth came out. They had all concocted a plan to get up in the middle of the night, go in the pantry and get some of the Christmas chocolates. Unfortunately, they lack the same grace that I do and made a little bit too much noise.
Livey said, “It was Benny’s idea. He told us to do it.”
“Yeah, that’s fine and dandy, but Benny was the smart one who stayed in his bed and let you and your brother do the dirty work for him!”

Footnote:
The kids still talk about doing these types of things. They sit around concocting extraordinary plans, which they call “Mission Spectacular”. The current one involves “finding” a big tractor, taking it down to Walmart, hiding in there until all the workers are gone, and eating all the chocolate and ice cream they can find.
Only one problem: There aren’t any tractors to find and our Walmart is open 24 hours.
Mission Spectacular will for ever be an Impossible Mission!

Mission Spectacular…love it!
Thanks for sharing.
Your kids are too smart; it’s like a mini Ocean’s 11, how do they come up with those things!
have a great weekend SAM!
I love your blog! And your kids! Their minds are sharp, they just need to work on the execution of the plan. Or maybe not…
Absolutely hysterical!! I see these types of events looming on the horizon for me ;-)
that is so funny!!! kids…little criminal masterminds!
xoxo
That is too funny!! And you were there to regulate! Poor Fury – he has to hatch and execute his missions solo. I can only imagine the stuff he’d cook up with accomplices.
How funny. I think this is why we stopped at two kids. We didn’t want the plotters to outnumber us. Of course they have figured out to include the cats in their nefarious plans of mayhem and destructiveness, but we are usually able to thwart outright coups attempts.
I remember coming up with some of those schemes as a kid…those are fun!
My kids are only two and four, but they do stuff like this too. They are they unstoppable duo. I’m afraid that #3 due in Oct. is going to be left out a lot.
i may be newish here, but seriously, am i the only one that went “OMG, they’re secret agent children!”
Sounds like they’ve got great imaginations!
Ok-that was totall a great and funny story! very amusing.
ingenious little buggers. That was funny, thanks for sharing.
I don’t think my kids would do this. They barely get out of bed to go to the bathroom. I think they would wear Depends if I let them. Me, however? My kind of adventure!
I was always thwarted by the lid of the candy jar clinking to the base.
LOL! That’s a hearty need for chocolate!!
mission spectacular! awesome.
clever clever children
Great post! These are the stories that your kids will fondly remember together as adults. :)
