100 Words: Lessons
You’re going to what?
Why would you want to do that?
I’d just send them to school,
Then you could get a job.
You know it’s going to be hard, right?
What about friends?
What about riding the school bus?
The cafeteria?
I think you’re being cruel.
Why on earth?
Do I care what you think?
How crazy you think I am?
Decisions not made lightly;
Life’s all about choices.
We’ve chosen what we feel is best for us.
Lessons learned, here at home,
Are applied everywhere, all the time.
Cruel, wrong, strange, or imposing?
It’s your judgment that is!

We home schooled our two older boys. We heard all of the arguments, dealt with all of the staid attitudes but in the end - we won. My boys are fine, productive young men. In spite of the dire predictions of family and friends. One of the few times where I’ve actually been able to look them all square in the eye and say “Up yours.”

We went through this too, it is difficult but you know you have to do what your heart feels is right…we never gave up the homeschooling.

THANK YOU for posting this! We sent Liv to school this year against my better judgement and it’s been miserable… so we WILL be homeschooling, and we’re already hearing the arguments!

Great 100.
So much can be said in so few words.

i’ve thought about this - how judgement people must be towards your family. as someone whose thinking pretty hard about home schooling to a child (potentially with special needs), i’ve already gotten some opinions. i hope that some times, you hear, “you and your family are inspiring.”

I am a public school teacher and the first one to say that the system does not always work. My hubs wants to home-school the kids. But, we can’t seem to afford one of us staying home on this money-sucking island we live on.

you tell ‘em, mishi!

My brother was homeschooled, I was not. I learned the it’s six of one, half-dozen of the other. One is not better than the other - you choose which fits best for your family.
I’m insaenly jealous of your talent with words

What a great post. I can’t imagine how hard that was to cram that into 100 words. I also can’t imagine the level of scrutiny and “advice” you must receive for homeschooling. We all must do what works best for our family…it’s not for others to judge.

I went through this too. I once asked a family member why they felt the need to attack my decision when I didn’t attack theirs, and she was honest. She said that seeing another parent making decisions that were radical, against the grain, and therefore potentially thoughtful, made her doubt if she was doing everything she could. It made her uncomfortable.
It was nice to get an honest answer, even if it was post-attack.
Good for you!

I love this one…thank you for writing it. we are contemplating homeschooling our daughter next year…it is not an easy decision to make and I hate hearing everyone’s opinions or seeing their eye rolls….I don’t like close minded people!!
