13 Things About My Senior Prom

  • I was going to go with this guy who eventually got the chicken pox, so my friend Renee and I were going to go stag.
  • When my grandfather heard that I was going to go without a date he took it upon himself to ask his Macedonian butcher friend if his son would take me.
  • The butcher’s son called me and asked me to my own prom.
  • I gladly accepted.
  • My grandmother made my dress which was inspired by a dress I saw on Beverly Hills 90210.
  • The day of the prom, the Grateful Dead were playing down the road at Rich Stadium.
  • Our limo was late by almost 2 hours due to an accident with a VW van full of Dead Heads.
  • My date got to sit on my parent’s back porch with my parents and grandparents while I obsessed over where the limo was. I’m sure he was really thrilled.
  • At Renee’s house we took pictures by her pool. I had visions of falling in. Thankfully, I did not.
  • When we got to the place where Prom was held people were very curious as to where I got my tall, dark, college-aged date.
  • He was very gentleman-like, we had many nice conversations, we danced, and it stands out in my mind as a very lovely evening.
  • I didn’t attend any after parties. When the limo brought my date and I back to my house he kissed my cheek and told me that he was happy to take me to my prom.
  • The Prom’s song was “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel.

Love, I don’t like to see so much pain
so much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive
