The Movie of my Youth

The other day, while I was marched to the toy aisle in “Hell”, I stopped by the five dollar movie bin. Lowe and behold I found the movie of my youth. The movie that I had seen countless times. The movie that I can wholeheartedly say is my favorite movie of all time. This movie was one of those that has the ability to touch [my] heart, and at that ripe age it was able to speak to me about friendship, loyalty, and trust. I’ve carried these virtues with me for a long time now, despite any set back or obstacle I’ve encountered.

As time went on we saw less and less of Teddy and Vern until eventually they became just two more faces in the halls. That happens sometimes. Friends come in and out of your life like busboys in a restaurant.
—Gordie LaChance, the narrator

Friendship is a fickle thing, it is. Friends come, friends go, but they always seem to leave an imprint on your heart. You remember them. The good, the bad, the ugly, the happy, the sad, the everything. Watching this movie reminded me of that. It reminded me of good times that were spent, but it also reminded me of loss and change. That’s life, and that’s how it goes. All I know is that the imprints that were left upon my heart won’t be erased. These past friends, faces in the halls, memories, have their place within me. There they reside until called upon, and there I will keep them despite [their] absence in my life.

If you don’t already read Wil Wheaton’s blog, you should. He mentions this movie every so often. He just talked not long ago about Rob Reiner’s direction…it’s very cool.

Wil Wheaton is a favorite and I ventured to call him my boyfriend during his ST:TNG years!! I left him a comment on his latest SBM thread, too.

I whole heartily agree. It’s funny to think about life’s seasons and the people who come and go….and that’s okay. However, it is amazing those friends that come and never go…rare but occasionally it happens.

I’m lucky to have one of those friends! He even came to visit me half way across the world:

Joyce, I must warn you.. lots of bad language.. I told Mikey that it’s the main reason he’s not watching it. A few damnss and a couple shits or ass, but not like what this one has. Lotsa old school bad language.

    Hi, Mishelle,
Have you ever read any of Ralph Moody’s books about his youth (sort of a boy version of the Little House on the Prairie books)? Little Britches is the first in the series. These are non-fiction, EXCELLENT books, Mishelle, but the language. Mr. Moody writes what the cowboys actually said, etc. I read the books to the children when they were little, but of course modified the language for their young ears.

As you know, we home schooled during those early, tender years. My children, now that they are older and are in public school, have now heard those words. Thankfully, they don’t USE the language themselves, and they seem to be able to look beyond it to care about others anyhow.

Long-winded response! Thanks for the disclaimer. :)

Hi Mis! I’m with you. This is one of my absolute favorite movies. It is also a fav of my seventeen year old son. I think he was on the eve of his fourteenth birthday when I shared it with him. It has had a major impact on his perception of friendship, like you mention.

Another one we love along the same lines… The Outsiders
