At the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities.

18 Months
Dear David,
I can’t believe that you are one and a half! This past six months has brought so much growth to you. To all of us really. Everyday, with you, discovering something new is a blessing and a gift. I treasure it.
Some things I don’t quite like, but I know they are all a part of your development. For example, I don’t like how you stalk the chairs and as soon as one is left unattended, you climb up, and up, and up, and up. There was one day, last week, that I had a headache and I laid down on the couch. Benny was playing nicely with you and I asked him to keep a close eye on you. Well, about ten minutes into my resting your loving big brother screeched, “MAMA, DAVEY’S ON THE TABLE!” I bounced up off the couch to see you standing there with the cheesiest shit-eating grin in the world. There, in the middle of the kitchen table, you stood flinging all the kids’ pencils and pens down. As soon as you were in my arms you were giggling, as if you had gotten away with something really major. Since then, you stalk the chairs. Maybe you’ll be a P.I. when you grow up?

Screaming is another thing I can do without. There’s a lapse in communication, I know, and it seems that the only way to express yourself or tell us you want something is through various pitches of screams and squeals. The other day you were eating graham crackers. You wanted more and instead of saying, “Mama, crackers!” you pointed at them, bent your knees, and screamed bloody murder. Sadie even flinched. Speaking of which, you have to stop teasing those dogs with your crackers and stuff. They are old and very patient, especially Sadie, and she will follow you all day long if it means getting a bite of something.
I love that you are learning new things. Like how to feed yourself with a spoon, how to get off (and on) couches and beds, how to walk down the stairs with my assistance, and so much more. You are becoming quite the little dynamo!

This morning your Papa came home from his work rotation. All week long, when we’d wake up in the morning you’d go to the shelf in my room, pick up our wedding picture, bring it to me, and I’d point to each of us and say, “That’s Papa and that’s Mama,” and you’d giggle and light up. Last night, as you were falling asleep *in my arms I whispered to you that Papa would be home in the morning. You raised your head and said, “Papa. Papa. Papa,” and then laid back down and fell asleep. I know you were happy to see him this morning after you got out of your I-just-woke-up-mood, and I know that he was just as happy to see his “Big Boy”.

You’re a pure delight, Davey. The next six months will bring words and actions and thoughts and moods and fun and laughter and bumps and bruises and all that being almost-two brings. I say, bring it!
Love,
Mama
*I know I should be getting you to sleep, in your bed, but I’m not 100% ready to let you be a big boy. You are my baby and I want to hold you in my arms for as long as possible.
