Weekly Winners {MAKfest09 Edition, Part II)
Some of the best memories I have are of being a Macedonian folk dancer. I danced from the ages of 5-18, and it’s an experience I will always treasure. Watching these “older” groups really made me wax nostalgic.
Then last night I had the pleasure of being at a “Girl’s Night Out” with some old friends from our church. We sat around telling stories of our old hall and the times that have passed us by which have led us to now. It was wonderful. There was laughter. There was great food. There was wine. There was a sense of calm, as well. I was honored to be a part of it. I felt aged, but in a good way.
Looking at these pictures of the dancers just makes me wish for those feelings of butterflies in the belly just before the music started. The glances that would be passed to the other dancers are etched in my brain and carried in my heart. Though time changes us, makes us part, or brings us back together, I will always have those special moments.

Hi Michelle! These are gorgeous. I love the costumes – the colors and patterns. What a wonderful experience it must have been for you! To be part of keeping this aspect of your heritage alive is an amazing thing. This is my first time to join Weekly Winners – I’m excited!

When I a teenager, I played tournament bridge. Every now and then, I’ll be in a hotel and I’ll catch a whiff of something and the smell brings back memories of the national tournaments. I get that same kind of butterfly/excitement feeling you described.
I loved your pictures– but I loved the nostalgia in your intro even more. Your memories brought back my memories!

Not only did it look like you were having fun, but you can totally tell by the captures you have here, that the dancers were having a blast as well! Great photos!

These are so fun! I particularly like the second one, as that woman’s expression says it all. :) I’ll have to keep my eyes open for Macedonian dance troupes in the future!

How wonderful. I love love folk dancing. My sister and I took Polish dancing for years even though we aren’t Polish, but there was a hall down the street from us. Good times.

Oh my goodness thats me in the 2nd pic…lol! All your pics are great and I will be showing them to the rest of the group. Our group is called Ensemble Makedonka and we are affiliated with St. Clement of Ohrid Macedonian Orthodox Church in Toronto.
I would love to see more pics if you have any. We are collecting pictures for the groups 50th anniversary celebration next month.
