About Photo Editting
Another question that I am often asked is about photo editing or how I post-process my pictures. I’m often asked what program(s) I use, how I learned, and—ultimately—which I like best.
Believe it or not, years ago, when I was still a bulletin board mama entrenched in mama-drama, I actually refused to use Adobe Photoshop. We had it, and I could have learned, but I flat-out refused. Instead I turned to Microsoft Paint (hangs head in the shame-of-shames), not knowing what an amazing program I could have been working with and learning. In 1998. Stupid me!
In 2007 when I started getting back into photography the first thing Michael said was, “So are you going to actually learn how to use Photoshop or are you gonna use it’s douchebag-of-a-cousin Microsoft Paint?”
I immediately had him install Photoshop on my old laptop. It’s been true love ever since.
Adobe Photoshop is absolutely amazing. The one problem? It’s kind of expensive. But, for professional photographers, web- and graphic-designers, and the serious amateur photographer it’s a necessity.
Adobe also has Lightroom. Which is my second true love. Using LR is essential when you have an established workflow. Personally, it allows me to quickly import, process, manage, and export my images. I use Lightroom over 75% of the time now because of the time it saves me.
Then there’s *Picnik. When friends ask me what they should choose to edit with, and they tell me that they can’t buy one of the photo-editing software that I love to use, I show them Picnik. It’s fast, easy, and fun, and it allows for some really creative post-processing.
In future installments of this “Let’s Talk Photography, Baby” series, I will talk more about the actions and presets you can use for Photoshop and Lightroom. I’ll also be exploring how to make minor tweaks to your photos to make them pop, how to create awesome black-and-whites, how to add your own personal watermark to your photos, and much more!
