Connections

“Mama?” you asked, “are we reflections?”

I couldn’t help but smile and start to….reflect!

Maybe we are reflections?

Surely it was a very profound question for a boy of almost four.

+++++

You were on our bed when I caught you looking into the old television.   You stared so deeply—one moment—and the next you buried your precious little face into my fluffy pillow, only to slowly peek back around your shoulder to catch another glimpse.

“What’cha doing, baby?”  I soothed as I lay down next to you, on Papa’s side of the bed.

“What’s that, Mama?” you questioned.

“I don’t know, what’s what?”  I tried to get you to focus.

“That! Is that the connection, Mama?” you asserted.

“I don’t know, baby. Is that a connection?”  I responded with a question, confused.

+++++

Papa helped me figure it out soon thereafter, when he joined us on the bed.

“What’s that, Papa?” you questioned.

“What, Davey?” he asked.

“The connection.  Is that the connection, Papa?” you asked again.

“Oh! The reflection in the TV, you mean?” he caught on quickly.

You giggled a nervous laugh, and said, “ohhhhhh it’s a reflection.”

+++++

After I zipped up your new pajamas, I pulled you close to me, if only to smell your baby sweet hair.

“Mama, hold me, hold me,” you pleaded.

“I’ll hold you, baby,” I assured.

“Mama, carry me, carry me,” you continued to plead.

“Why Davey, you’re a big boy, let’s walk downstairs together!”  I said.

“No.  The connection!” you exclaimed.

{You didn’t want to look in the mirror on my dresser, I deduced.}

“Oh, baby, look!  It’s just you.  And me.  It’s Davey and Mama in the reflection.  We’re the connection in the reflection. See?!”  I breathed into your ear.

You smiled.

I smiled back.

“Mama?” you asked, “are we reflections?”

“Yes, Davey.  We are.  We are beautiful reflections and I don’t ever want to forget it.”

Watching Thomas Together

My Sentiments Exactly

Today I followed some links and landed on some interesting viewing material.   This video that Zack Arias produced for a guest post on Scott Kelby really spoke to me today.  I’m watching it for the fourth time, just after I publish this post.

I don’t have anything figured out. I don’t know what I’m doing, even if [you] think I am.  But, I’m going to be patient.  I’m on my way.

The challenge for {Week 5} of “Picture It Outside of the Box” is:

{Shoot Up A Tree}

If you visit my Flickr stream in the fall you will see that I am majorly obsessed with trees and leaves.  One of my favorite things to do is get really close up against a tree, focus, and shoot.  I usually use a big aperture (like 1.4 – 2.8).   But, again, the interpretation of this challenge is left to you.  I’d love to see what you come up with!

Here are a couple of examples of my work:

The Challenge: How It Works

  • Each week, on Friday, I announce the “Picture It Outside of the Box” photo challenge theme.
  • You can submit a photo for the theme by the following THURSDAY. Enter your direct link (to your blog post with the photo in it or your photo on Flickr) in the thumbnail McLinky Tool at the bottom of the post. Keep in mind the linky-loo will close down on Thursday at 12:00 AM EST.
  • FIVE submissions from my readers will be showcased on Friday, and the new theme will then be revealed.
  • Basically: you play along, you have fun, we show each other our awesome photos, we share inspiration….it’s a win-win situation!
  • Visiting fellow photo challenge players is highly encouraged!

Thanksgiving Leaves

Having unique veins
Grown individually

Each leaf’s different

They stick together
Through fog and stormy weather
Not knowing their stregnth

Families like leaves
Through differences they grow
Thankful for the branch
